Of Storms, knitting, and cleaning

I’m going to have to write this post out qick and get it up. There’s a bad thunderstorm bearing down on my house at the moment. There are tornado warnings, and watches popping up like crazy.

I’ve been working on knitting a hat, in the round, with double pointed needles (points on both ends). It’s been quite a challenge but I’m now on the last third of the pattern. What made it so hard is I made a series of mistakes from the start.

Used normal (worsted) weight yarn for a project that needed finger weight yarn (think about half the size or smaller of normal yarn). Which means that the 6 inch DPN are a bit too short, so I’m having to use clothes pins to clip the yarn to the needles… Rather silly looking, and annoying, but it’s less annoying than stitches coming loose because they came off the end of the needle… So be sure to check the weight of the yarn required.. (I’ve learned that the hard way).

Fortunately it’s turning out well anyway. It’s going to be an adult hat rather than a baby hat, because the thicker yarn makes it far too big to be a baby hat. But it all works out because my mom needed a new winter hat for when she goes on her walks to exercise, and she loves strawberries.

The hallway is coming along nicely, what’s left is mostly small bits and pieces to sort out. As well as figuring out where to put the crochet thread, and our bag of swimming stuff. The one major project left is just mainly time consuming. Sorting out the boxes of buttons by color. We have one box that is sorted already, so that one is done. We have several other containers of unsorted buttons.

The main problem right now is figuring out what to sore them in. We’ve considered beading boxes, quart jars, and old bird seed jugs. We’ll probably end up with a combination of jars, and bird seed jugs (we have quite a bit of both already). Hopefully it won’t take terribly long to do that. I’ll probably sort them out while watching TWiT during the week.

Sounds like the rain is picking up, so I’d better stop here so I have time to check the spelling before the lightning comes. Take care y’all.

Sewing storage WIP

General advice from other writers to get over a writers block is to just start writing, and keep writing until you’re unstuck… So thanks to some prodding from a gaming buddy of mine I’ll try it. I need to get back into the grove.

I guess the best place to start is to tell y’all what I’ve been up to.

Thanks to going back and watching Threadbanger (only up to 08 now). I figured out a few rough ideas on how to reorganize our sewing supply storage out in the hallway. Mom, went from there and figured out a lot of the rest of it. She knows far more about sewing than I do. (I can sew pillows or curtains by myself, but that’s about the best of it. Clothes I still need a lot of help with.)

We cleaned out and moved a desk that we’d set there temporarily, and moved in the chest of drawers that I had before my parents found my bedroom suite. It has four little drawers on top. That’s where we’re putting the bias tape, zippers, ribbons, appliques, etc. Then in the four bigger drawers underneath, we’re going to put lace, elastic, and possibly material. Although we may decide on putting something else more important in some of them. As there is a closet to put material in.

We haven’t started going though the two bookcases on either side of the chest of drawers. I they’re mostly full of books and patterns, though we’re not quite sure what’s in the doors on the bottom. I vaguely remember that they used to have patterns in them. I remember mom and I sorting them out at one point, hence I cannot be sure what’s in there now.

Dad has to fix two more of the drawers yet. The chest of drawers has been upstairs so long that it was starting to fall apart. Our second floor isn’t heated in the winter, or cooled in the summer, so the temperatures worked it apart. Dad even had to work on the main body of the chest of drawers some. Fortunately that didn’t seem to take too long, but Dad said these last two drawers are going to be a challenge to fix. From what he said they’re basically in pieces. He said the work wasn’t technically hard, but somewhat tedious and fiddly.

I don’t know how far along he is on them, hopefully he’ll be done soon. Then mom and I can finish the sewing area, and we can get to work on some projects I have planned.

In other news:

While the blog has been idle I’ve been updating my gallery over at DeviantArt. There are several new photos and a painting for y’all to check out if you want. I’m also quite active over on twitter.com my ID is stancymckatt.

Y’all take care now, ya hear? ;-)
